Summit is the far peak, second from left. This spot site of huge eruption in 1995 and starting point for Lahars. Was planning to make it to the summit, but going to it round the right meant going by huge crevasses and our novice mountain climbing group was satisfied with reaching this far.

Mmm love the effect on this one ( resulting from rough scans from the negatives). Reminiscent of grainy faded yet iridescent memories of childhood beach summer holidays. The East Coast road from Gisborne to Opotiki apart from being a land apart from the rest of nzone is full of speccy coastal driving.

A-Tia-Muri literally means turned back and refers to the explorations of Tia of the Arawa canoe. The intrepid traveller had to turn back at the Atiamuri Rapids in his early explorations of the Waikato River.

Taken before most hell raising climb ever on unstable scoria on 45 angle and very long steep you won't stop till you are dead slope below. Was life freaking threatening adrenalin for the next hour or so till we made it to the crater. Still, a nice shot though cropped a bit - scanned from only photo, I've tragically lost the original.

Ross further up on the failed (by encountering hard ice) mission to the crater lake. There are some neat snow blasted rock effects from here on up from the snow that had fallen in the last 48 hours but due to winds and me feeling ill the camera was banished to the pack for the rest of the day - no matter we plan our next trip in March.
